John Oliver Smith

John Oliver Smith, age 76, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2026, End Stage Renal Disease. Born on July 24, 1950, John was from Kansas City, Kansas, where his story began. Throughout his life, he was known for his humor, hardworking nature, stubborn spirit, and unmistakable charm. He had a personality that left an impression, and he certainly knew how to make people smile.
John worked as a forklift driver, taking pride in working hard and making his way through life. Outside of work, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle and the freedom that came with being on the open road. But among his greatest joys were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart.

John had a gift that was uniquely his own: he knew how to make people feel good about themselves. He was quick with a compliment and never seemed to miss an opportunity to make someone feel noticed, appreciated, or worthy. Whether through a kind word, a little humor, or his natural charm, he had a way of making people feel special. That is a quality that will be remembered by those whose lives he touched.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fremon Smith; his stepson, Cole Harris; and his grandparents.

John is survived by his mother, Hazel Cook; his daughter, Carissa Margrave (Ben); his grandchildren, Timothy Margrave, Samuel Margrave, Megan Margrave, Aiyanah Harris, and Adriene Harris; his great-grandson, Theodore Shouse-Margrave; his brother, Steve Smith; as well as his niece, nephew, cousins, and extended family.

He will be deeply missed by all his family. “Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day.”

Memorial service arrangements will be announced at a later date.
