John Penman 70, passed away peacefully at his home in Olathe, KS on Monday (10/13/08). John was born in Hamilton, Scotland on June 7, 1938 and was raised in Liverpool, England. Later in life, his father immigrated to Canada, where John joined the Canadian Army for two years before joining the U.S. Army in 1960 where he proudly served for over 28 years. He served two tours in Vietnam and was stationed at Ft. Lee, VA; Ft. Lewis, WA; Ft. Jackson, SC; Fort Sill, OK; Albuquerque, NM; and numerous locations in Germany. He was married to the former Brigitte Wegner of Rhoding, Germany in Oct 1961. One of John’s proudest moments came following his tour in Vietnam when he became US Citizen. John retired at Peden Barracks in 1988 and his family settled in Wertheim, Germany before returning to the United States in 1992.
John’s survivors include his sister Janice (Penman) Phillips of Stafford, VA; his daughter Tara and her husband Jeff Johnson, Tampa, FL; his son David Penman and his wife Shawna, Olathe, KS; and four grandchildren: Rebecca and Patrick Johnson; Mecaila and Tyanna Penman. He is preceded in death by his wife Brigitte (Wegner).
Graveside Services and burial will be held 1p.m. on Monday (10/20/08) at Fort Riley, KS. A reception will follow at the American Legion Post 45 in Junction City, KS. Visitation will be held 3-4p.m. Sunday (10/19/08) at the Warren-McElwain Funeral Home in Eudora, KS.
