Mr. Joseph E. Curns (Pep) was born April 20, 1941 in Taft, OK, to the union of Joseph Curns and Gertie Walker Curns-Pickett. He received Christ at the Apostle Church of Jesus Christ and was baptized in 1998. He received his formal education in the Kansas City, MO,
District.
Joe was very active with the youth. He was instrumental , along with his late brother Roger Curns and late friend Tom Neely in starting The Street Academy from 1970 thru 1977. In late 1977 he and his brother moved to L.A., and found employment with Active West Bowling Center of L.A. Joe relocated back to Kansas City in June of 1998.
He worked at The Walnut?s as a doorman until his health failed him.
Both parents, two brothers Roger (Chuck) Curns, Roscoe Curns and sister Donna Curns preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn his passing two daughters Tolese Curns and Kimberly Cooper. Six grandchildren and one great granddaughter. One brother, Jack Pickett of Tampa, FL, three sisters, Yvonne Curns, Stephanie Pickett of Kansas City and Barbara Curns of Queens, NY. Two step-sisters, Judith Taylor and Lorna Johnson. Two sisters-in-law, Rosie Curns of Kansas City, MO, and Linda Curns of Carson, CA. A host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. And Victoria Martin, a dear, long-time friend of the family.
A very special thanks to Dr. Patel and the Oncology staff at Truman Medical Center. Thanks also to Hospice. We are forever grateful for their services.
I met Joe through his brother (my former boss and business mentor) Roger more than 25 years ago. Although I was not close to Joe, I had the pleasure of meeting and working with him, and having the opportunity to hear many stories of his childhood from Roger. I will be forever grateful for the Curns family as they have been a rich blessing in my life.
I have no idea as to why I decided to look up Rogers’ name some 15 years or more since I last saw him in Los Angeles (oh yes I do….I was reacquainted with one of Roger and Joe’s bosses just last week who said, “Roger was one of my favorite people in the whole world!); but will say, I was saddened to read of Joe’s passing!
I remember the day I met Joe and thought, “He must be a Curns!” A wonderful person. Thanks for the memories…
