Judith Westphal

Judith (“Judy”) Kay Westphal (nee Hudson) died peacefully on January 6, 2024.  She was 81 years old.

Judy was born on June 26, 1942, in Moberly Missouri.  She moved to Kansas City, Missouri as a young girl, and later to Waterloo, Iowa, where she graduated from Waterloo West High School. There, Judy met her high school sweetheart, Donald Westphal, and they married on April 15, 1960.  Together, Judy and Don raised two daughters, Lisa and Lori.

Judy started her career with Hy-Vee Grocery Stores in 1971.  Her savviness and strong work ethic enabled her to work for the company for more than three decades. It was in 1988 that Hy-Vee trusted Judy to help open their first store in Leawood Kansas.  She jumped at the chance to move back to the Kansas City area, as it allowed her to be closer to family.  Judy retired from Hy-Vee in 2010.
In retirement, Judy could be found spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren.  She even invented a holiday, “Kids’ Day,” for them.  It was an occasion eagerly anticipated by all her grandkids.  Her family was Judy’s proudest achievement.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents, mother-in-law, father-in-law, as well as her husband, Donald Westphal.  Judy is survived by her two daughters, Lisa Hammett of Humboldt, Tennessee and Lori (Dennis) Glasgow of Kansas City, Missouri, her siblings, William “Sonny” Jeffress and Rosemary (Jim) Reed, many in-laws, along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many family friends.
A Celebration of Life for Judith will take place Saturday January 20, 2024, from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Heartland Cremation and Burial Society (6113 Blue Ridge Blvd. Raytown, MO 64133).
Flowers or plants can be sent to the funeral home the day of the service by 9:00 AM.
