Laurie Campbell

Laurie Hudson Campbell, 82, Fairway, Kansas, passed away on May 19, 2006, with his wife Jean by his side after a brief illness. A memorial service will be conducted on May 23, 2006, at 3 p.m. at the Country Club Christian Church Chapel, 6101 Ward Pkwy, Kansas City, Mo. Laurie was born February 14, 1924, in Bronxville, New York, and grew up in Wilmette, Ill., attending New Trier High School, where he met his future wife, graduating from Northwestern University. During WWII, Laurie was a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber pilot. He flew 35 combat missions in Europe and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and six air medals among his many awards for bravery and meritorious service. He was a marketing executive for Continental Can in New York and Chicago and was issued patents for developing some of the first six-pack cartons for beverages. He moved to the Kansas City area in 1969 and was a member of the Country Club Christian Church and Homestead Tennis Club in Fairway. During his residence in Greenwich, Conn., in the early 60s, he was a deacon and Church School Superintendent for six years at the Second Congregational Church in Greenwich. Laurie was an avid tennis player, a sports fan and believed humor was an important part of life. He enjoyed public speaking and was noted for his keen sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Campbell of the home and four daughters, Nancy Dorsey of Lawrence, Kan., Carol Carter of Fairway, Sue Bailey of Villanova, PA and Barbara Liberman of St. Louis. He is also survived by his older sister Virginia Sullivan of Glendale, Ill. Laurie was the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren. His entire family and his many friends will miss him, but take comfort from his example of a life well lived with service to his country, community and his family.
