Leland H. “Stoney” Stone, 70, passed away at his Liberty home on Sept. 13, 2004, after a long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Memorial services and visitation afterward will be held at Platte Woods United Methodist Church on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m. with a second service in Newman Grove, NE, to be scheduled. The family suggests donations to the Keith Worthington Chapter of the ALS Association at 8340 Mission Rd., Suite B4, Prairie Village, KS 66206. Leland was born Dec. 28, 1933, in St. Edward, NE, and graduated from Newman Grove High School in 1951. He joined the Army in Sept. 1953. He first served in Ft. Riley, KS, and completed his service in 1955 in Ft. Knox, KY, in the 11th Armored Cavalry Division. He married Patricia Piper in 1956 and moved to the Kansas City area in 1964. Leland retired as an aircraft mechanic in 1996 after 33 years with TWA. Leland Stone is survived by wife, Patricia; daughters, Nancy Rideout and Diane Christensen and husband, Eric, all of Liberty; brothers, Merlin Stone and wife, Pat, of St. Edward, NE, Leon Stone and wife, Ruth, Yuma, CO, and Marvin Stone and wife, Lucille, of Kearney, NE; and grandchildren, Jason Rideout, Jessica Rideout, Vanessa Stone-Mynatt, and Keith Christensen, all of Liberty, and Amy Christensen, Kansas City, MO.
