Margaret Giffen

Margaret Giffen, 86, Prairie Village, Kan., passed away Thursday, March 27, 2008. She was born February 21, 1922, to Homer and Bertha Scott in Topeka, Kan. Margaret grew up in Topeka and graduated from Topeka High School. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Edward Dean Giffen, on October 19, 2007. On Margaret’s wedding day, she was allowed to leave work one hour early, rode her bike home to get into her wedding dress and was married later that evening to Dean. After the war, they moved back to Topeka and in 1953 moved to Prairie Village. Margaret and Dean loved to travel, had many fun times together and made many good friends during their time together. Because Dean’s service in the military and his salesman’s job kept him away from home for long periods, much of the responsibility for raising their two children, Scott and Jamie, fell upon Margaret. She was a loving mother, wife and hardworking homemaker. Margaret enjoyed dancing (she was proud to say that she was the first to wear a strapless gown to her high school prom), enjoyed golf, was a great cook, and played a mean game of croquet. As a young girl, she ran as fast as a deer. Margaret maintained her quiet resolve, wry sense of humor and friendly ways to the very end. She will be greatly missed by her family and wonderful friends. Survivors include her daughter Jamie Kimbrough and her husband Rick Kimbrough, Leavenworth, Kan.; her son Scott Giffen and his wife Susan, Prairie Village; her grandchildren Jay Kimbrough, Kansas City, Carly Kimbrough, San Francisco, Calif., Carrie Giffen, Prairie Village, Julie Potter and her husband David, Mission, and her great granddaughter Emma, and Robert Giffen, Prairie Village, Kan.; brother Gordon Scott; sister Marion Helard, and sister-in-law Sally Bauers, Portland Ore. Memorial contributions may be made to Southminster Presbyterian Church, 6306 Roe, Prairie Village, KS 66208, Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66208, or Kansas City Hospice, 9221 Ward Pkwy., Kansas City, MO 64114.
