Martha “Marti” Dorris Miller

Martha “Marti” Dorris Miller, 74 of Kansas City, Missouri died peacefully in her home on August 24, 2020. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Colonial Presbyterian, Kansas City, Missouri with Pastor Mark Potter officiating.

She was born on June 10, 1946 at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Oak Harbor, Washington, she was a devoted mother and friend to many. During her life, she sailed boats, flew airplanes, served as a missionary to multiple native tribes in the US, Canada, and Ecuador. As an educator from Miami Bible College, she ran two different one-room schoolhouses, worked in synagogues, and taught in Christian schools. She owned a bookstore in Junction City, Kansas in the late 80’s.

Marti was an award-winning florist when she lived in Cashiers, NC. In her 50’s, she earned a certificate in Association Management from Duke University. Throughout her life, she rescued and loved many animals.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Robert and Lenora “Linda” Dorris, and her three brothers, Robert Jr., Don, and Scott Dorris.  Marti is survived by: her son, Charles W. Miller Jr. of Flint, Michigan (daughter-in-law, Townes W. Osborn Miller), daughter, Elizabeth Michelle Miller of Kansas

City, Missouri, and her sister Laurie Dorris of Cashiers, North Carolina.

    Wow, there is so much I didn’t know about my aunt unfortunately. I am grateful that the last year we talked frequently, although under stressful circumstances, but it gave us a chance to catch up and talk. Charles and Beth, I am so sorry for your loss. You three have always been so close and know that she will always be with you. I know she respected and loved you both dearly. RIP Aunt Marti. You will be missed.

    Vividly recall an afternoon sitting in the Dorris family living room surrounded by Marty and her myriad of college friends playing thier guitars and singing folk songs. What an awesome jam session. Talented and lovely woman. Love forever.
