Mary Ann (Durkin) Yount was born on September 19, 1945, and left this world on October 12th, 2026. Mary was a fierce warrior and gentle enigma. She shared her life with her best friend and husband, Joseph Yount, of nearly 54 years and her children Nick (Diane), Courtney (Casey) and Eric (Alycia). Her greatest joy in life was being an amazing Nana to Nevaeh, CJ, Atlas, MaryGrace and Cooper.
Known as “Miss Mary” throughout the KC Metro area, Mary dedicated her life to serving the houseless as a social worker for many different organizations across the city. Whether she was walking through the streets of KC or the legislative halls of Jefferson City, Mary fought for justice and the inherent dignity and worth of all individuals. She was a change maker and community organizer in the truest sense.
Mary loved people. She loved hearing their stories and learning about the journeys that shaped them into the people they became. Always the first person with a hot meal, a place to sleep, a few dollars or an ear to listen, Mary filled her life with the richness of the human experience. Very rarely, would her home not be filled with the laughter of both blood and chosen family. Mary believed we are a collection of our experiences, so each of you left an imprint on who she was and she wanted to thank you for sharing some of yourselves with her. We can genuinely say if you knew her, no matter how well, you meant a great deal to her.
Per Mary’s explicit wishes, and in her true humble fashion, there will be no public service. The family asks instead for you do two simple things in her memory.

Mary (aka) Nana you will be greatly, greatly missed in our everyday lives. You are the strongest lady I was lucky enough to call my mother-in-law and my daughters were beyond blessed to have your support, cheers, love and example as their Nana. I know you will always be with us in the little signs we now watch for and will never take for granted. I know this life is not the end and we will all be together again. Listen for us because in the moments we want to pick up the phone for advice we will still turn to you for guidance. We will still share the crazy stories with you as always. We know you will be watching over us and be proud of the milestones in front of us. Thank You for all the memories and little moments even in the final day. We love you dearly. WE WIN!
Love, Eric – Alycia – Nevaeh & MaryGrace

My sister, #2 in a line of 6. I was a goer and Mary Ann was a quiet presence. As a kid we played cops and robbers while she played with her dolls. When a fight erupted, as can happen with 6 kids(5 girls) she was the peace maker. You will always be missed. But now you can say hey to mom and dad, Cherie, Kathy and Cecilia. Just know that you were loved deeply.
I lived next fort to the Durkin family on 59 St. Cecilia and I were the same age, and she was my lifelong friend until she died.
I have one vivid memory of Mary in her prom dress as she prepared to go to our high school, Bishop Hogan, so the nuns could approve it. One of those moments of the era. She had a great laugh.
Love to all of you.
