Mary Kathryn Barge

Mary Kathryn (Closson) Barge peacefully passed on Sunday, March 8, 2015. She will be greatly missed by her three sons, three brothers, her sister, her “sisters”, her loving daughter-in-law, her family, her friends, and all that knew her. She adored her grandchildren, Abbi and Gunnar more than anything in this world.

Mary Kathryn Closson was born to Glenn (“JR”) and Kate Closson on July 27th, 1944 in Independence, MO.  She was a proud 1962 graduate of William Chrisman High School in Independence.  Mary Kathryn studied nursing at the Independence Sanitarium and gained her LPN in 1963.   In November of 1965, Mary Kathryn and Larry Barge of Dakota City, Nebraska were married in St. Louis, MO.  Larry and Mary Kathryn have three sons; Jeff, born August 1, 1973, Jared, born September 9, 1977, and Josh born August 9, 1983.  Mary Kathryn completed her registered nursing degree in 1984 through Avila College in Kansas City.

As a lifelong nurse, her spirit and loving nature touched the many she cared for and worked with. Her adventurous spirit was passionate about nature and camping. An informal Celebration of Her Life will be held at 2pm, Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Walnut Gardens Community of Christ Church in Independence, MO. Please come dressed as Mary Kathryn would have remembered you. Nurses, as a fellow nurse, Mary Kathryn would be proud to see you in your favorite scrubs. Camping friends, your favorite bonfire duds would warm her heart. Mary Kathryn loved small stones, crystals and rocks with character; please bring a small stone for her to carry on her next adventure. The family will have extra stones available if needed. Her favorite desserts will refresh you after a Celebration of Her Life. Those who loved her can remember her together in a relaxed setting, in a way Mary Kathryn would have wished.

She is survived by her three sons; Jeff, Jared and Josh of Blue Springs, MO;  her daughter-in-law, Janelle Paul Barge;  her grandchildren, Abbi and Gunnar Barge;  her brothers and sister James Closson, Charlie Closson, Bill Closson, and Allie Woods; her sisters-in-law Patricia Closson, Rita Closson and Nancy Closson.

Even though I only met her in 1979 We became instant friends. We went to church together until she moved in 1982.She was my age. I babysat for Jeff and Jared. I loved them and her. She made an impact in my life that I have never forgotten. She truly is one of God’s Angels, She was one to me and I know she will be greatly rewarded. Love you Mary K.

When I was growing up, Mary Kathryn was the little sister I wanted, but never had. Hard to say good-by, cousin.

I met Mary Kate at Davita in Lee’s Summit. I was scared and didn’t know anyone. She reached out to me that day and we were instant friends. She used to refer to us as Lavern and Shirley. We shared our love for MU. I made her a headband and scarf using the MU colors. I will miss her a lot!!!!
