Mary Madalene Swetnam

Mary Madalene Swetnam July 18, 1932 – March 22, 2024

Mary Madalene Swetnam, born July 18, 1932, peacefully passed away on March 22, 2024. Madalene was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She attended Stephens College and the University of Missouri where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

Madalene enriched many lives as a preschool teacher at St. Paul’s Episcopal School and a Kindergarten teacher in Richmond, MO. She was known for her kindness, patience, and sense of humor. Madalene was an active member of the Village Church of Lee’s Summit.

She is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, Wayne Swetnam, her daughter Caren Sprague (Neil), her sons Jeffrey Swetnam (Janet) and Gregory Swetnam (Kris), as well as her grandchildren Leslie Goellner (Nick), Paige Raminfar (Alex), Sarah Roberts (Jacob), Jacob Swetnam, Alexandra Moore (Kyle), Andrew Swetnam, step-grandchildren Max Sprague (Amy) and Garrett Sprague, and great-grandchildren Ayden Raminfar, Blair Roberts, Bode Roberts, Josephine Moore, and Madalene Moore. Madalene was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved granddaughter Rachel Swetnam.

A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 2:30pm at the Courtyard Community Center of John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit. A reception will follow from 3:00pm-5:30pm in the Courtyard Library. Contributions can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Madalene’s memory.

Madalene will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in our hearts.
