Dr. Michael Terry Lyons, 79, of Raytown, Missouri, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026.
Michael was born August 7, 1946 in Long Beach, California. He grew up in New Mexico and later called Virginia, Florida, and Missouri home.
A proud Vietnam Veteran, Michael, served his country in the United States Navy. After his service, his curiosity and drive never stopped. He earned his pilot’s license, worked as a private investigator, and went on to achieve his Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering.
He retired as a government contractor for the Office of Naval Intelligence, continuing his love for the sea and his mechanical engineering. Michael loved to tinker — whether in the garage or his office, he was always building, fixing, or figuring something out. He had a deep passion for computers, motorcycles, and boating. He brought that same energy and ingenuity to everything he did.
Michael is preceded in death by father Jack Lyons, mother Elsie Lyons, younger brother Patrick Lyons, and younger sister Coleen Lyons.
He is survived by his son, Asher Lyons and wife Christine Lyons; his grandchildren, Jansen Lyons, Ethan Lyons, Brooke Smyth and husband Colton Smyth, and Grace Lyons; his great-granddaughter, Evelyn Smyth and soon expected great-grandson Smyth; his daughter, Stacey Lyons; his younger sister, Kathy Burger and husband Bob Burger. He also leaves behind seven nephews — Daniel Longfield, Collin Longfield, Evan Longfield, James Holiday, Daniel Holiday, Joseph Holiday, and Scott Burger — and three nieces — Stephanie Burger, Rachel Slayers, and Christine Gallegos. He also had many great nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association or the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Both charities were near and dear to our hearts, especially during these last few years.
Services will be held privately by the family.

I am sorry to hear of Uncle Mike’s passing, but am relieved his family was there for him and that his passing was peaceful. May he be welcomed into heavens gates with open arms to be with those that have gone before him. With my condolences and love

I am so deeply sorry for the loss of your dad. Watching someone you love battle Alzheimer’s is an incredibly painful journey, and I know how much of yourself you gave as his caregiver. Your love, patience, and devotion meant more to him than words could ever express.
Your dad raised an amazing daughter, and the care and comfort you gave him through the hardest moments was such a beautiful reflection of that love. Please know I’m holding you and your family close in my heart and praying for peace, comfort, and strength in the days ahead.💗
