Mitchell “Mitch” Thomas Capps

Mitchell “Mitch” Thomas Capps, age 63, passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2023, near Kingsville, Missouri.

Mitchell was born to Faye L. Millican and Thomas D. Capps in Wagner, Oklahoma on April 23, 1960. He spent his early childhood in Johnson County, Kansas with his parents and three older sisters Janice Jarrett, Patricia Grandfield and Cheryl Knapp, with frequent trips to Stilwell and Westville, Oklahoma, where his grandparents Thomas and Annabelle Capps, Kenneth and Lula Millican, and many other relatives lived.

Mitchell’s teen years were split between Pleasant Hill, Missouri and Stilwell, Oklahoma. In Pleasant Hill, he lived and worked with his dad and his wife Dorothy Harris, and their four children Jeri-Ann Harp, Wendy Wilson, Bill Wilson & Angela Capps Slayden. Mitchell spent the rest of his time growing up with his mother and her partner Sandra Flatt and her son Daniel, in Stilwell, finishing high school and learning to run his first general store.

Mitchell’s adult life, when he wasn’t working construction jobs, was spent managing convenience stores. He enjoyed working in the stores, mostly because “the work was easier,” he said, but more “ because it’s warmer!” He lived in Alabama most of that time! Cold Missouri and Oklahoma winters were just too cold to work outside, he said.

Mitchell was preceded in this life by his dad Thomas D. Capps; his stepmom Dolly Capps; his “other mom” Sandy Flatt; three sisters Janice Jarrett, Jerri-Ann Harp, and Wendy Wilson; one brother Daniel Flatt and one son Jeremy Whatley.

Survivors include his wife Sara, of the home; his mother Faye Capps, of Belton, Missour; three sisters Patricia Grandfield (Steve), of Warrensburg, Missouri; Cheryl Knapp (Robin) of St. Joseph, Missouri; and Angela Slayden (Craig) of Kingsville, Missouri; and two brothers Mike Zager of Kansas City, Missouri; and Bill Wilson (Kathy) of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; along with his two tough little buddies, Zander & Zayne.

Survivors also include four children Rosie Querry, Summer Capps, Charlie Whatley and Thomas M. Capps; four grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mitchell loved his family above all. He was a warrior, a fierce protector! He lived and died working for his family.

A Remembrance gathering is being planned.
