Nancy Lea (Nyberg) Palmer, Ph.D., 77, passed away on September 7, 2026, in Kansas City, Mo., surrounded by her family. Born on April 17, 1949 in St. Louis, Mo., she lived a full and faithful life dedicated to serving others.
The oldest of four siblings, Nancy was raised in Buffalo, Mo., where she and her husband Dr. Dennis Palmer met as teenagers. They were married August 11, 1967 and so began a lifetime of love, partnership and mission that would take them across the country and around the world together. Into this union were born three sons, Edward (Ted), Jonathan and Benjamin.
Nancy was a voracious learner, she first leaned into her creativity and love of art, earning a B.F.A. in Photography from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1976. She would go on to receive an M.A. in Missiology from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1986, and a Ph.D. in Medical Anthropology from the University of Kansas in 1993.
With her vast knowledge and empathetic nature, it was a natural fit for Nancy to become an educator, teaching many college courses throughout the years, including at the UMKC School of Medicine, North American Baptist Seminary in Sioux Falls, SD, and the Cameroon Baptist Theological Seminary in Ndu, Cameroon, Africa.
In 1979, Nancy and Dennis began what would become a lifetime’s missionary work in Cameroon under the North American Baptist Conference. In the rural community of Mbingo, they would serve as a catalyst for Mbingo Baptist Hospital’s expansion and the creation of an internal medicine residency program.
Nancy worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the mission’s success and to help build and sustain healthier communities within the West Africa region. Nancy took on the critical role of Administrator for the Hospital’s Christian Internal Medicine Specialization Residency program, as well as providing outreach and coordination for many related efforts. She held key roles in the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Board, serving as the Chair of the Institutional Review Board and Register of the Baptist Institute of Health Sciences.
It is nearly impossible to list all of Nancy’s roles and contributions to the mission and the people of Cameroon. Her more than 40 years of dedication and hard work has left behind a legacy that will continue to impact countless lives.
Throughout her life, Nancy remained a loving, faithful servant of God. She was actively involved in the church and in spreading the gospel of Jesus. She taught her children and grandchildren to see the world through compassionate eyes, recognizing and valuing the shared humanity within us all.
She loved to travel and explore as much as she loved spending time close to home with family and in nature, hiking, camping and enjoying her and Dennis’ cabin on Pomme de Terre lake. Nancy was an avid gardener and greatly enjoyed introducing her grandchildren to museums of art, science and history.
Nancy is survived by her loving husband Dennis; her sons Ted (Karen) Palmer, Jonathan (Erin) Palmer and Ben (Dede) Palmer; five grandchildren, Elijah, Sierra, Evelyn, Kaiya and Wyatt; and her siblings Dwight (Bunny) Nyberg, Jeanne Carr, and Laurie (Walter) Roberts; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents Kenneth and Lea Nyberg and brother-in-law Ralph Carr.
A visitation will be held on Saturday September 12, 2026 at 10:00 a.m., followed immediately by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m., at Christ Community Church – Brookside Campus, 400 W 67th St, Kansas City, MO 64113. A cookie and coffee reception will follow in the church foyer.

I take this opportunity to thank God for the life of Ma Palmer and the work she and her husband Dr Dennis Palmer have done in Cameroon. I serve as a doctor in my community in Cameroon through the lens of the gospel because of the training I received in the Christian Internal Medicine Specialisation. Through their efforts I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa and train as a clinical and Radiation Oncologist and I’m back to support the radiation therapy program that they initiated. Cameroon is a better place because of the work of God that they did. I pray that God will comfort Dr Dennis Palmer and the rest of the family and may Ma Palmer continue to rest with the Lord.

I will always remember her as a prayerful, loving and encouraging mother to all of us women at Mbingo 1 Baptist Church. She was a true source of encouragement to me personally — always kind, always ready to share wise counsel and nice Christian books to help me grow. My name is Ethan Helm, and I am a missionary pediatrician. My family and I have now served Jesus in this capacity for nearly eleven years, first in Cameroon and then in Cambodia. I am not sure that journey would have been possible without Nancy Palmer.
Our missionary career began at Mbingo Baptist Hospital, where Nancy and Dennis Palmer were assigned as our mentors. Sometimes mentorship assignments can feel like an arbitrary checkbox. That was never the case with Nancy and Dennis. They truly loved us.
When we made foolish mistakes, they corrected us with gentleness and kindness. They hurt when we hurt. Nancy loved us so well. When I struggled with the deaths of children, she supported not only me, but also my wife and our children. When we struggled with culture shock, she was never heavy-handed, but always patient, compassionate, and supportive.
Nancy taught us with grace. She never rubbed our mistakes in our faces, but lovingly directed us toward truth and the gospel. She was an incredible woman of faith. She blessed us time and again, as has your father.
We loved Nancy. We are better for having known her. The Palmers will always be part of our story, and we are deeply grateful that Jesus allowed us to know them.
Ma Palmer, you are greatly missed. Yet we have great hope and assurance that we will see you again. We want to be like you and Pa when we grow up.

Our hearts are heavy as Internists who were trained under the succinct supervision of you and Pa Palmer as part of your missionary work in the Cameroon Baptist Services, Christian internal Medicine Specialization Program.
Our tears travel to heaven and they are prayers too when we are lost for words (Psalm 56:8). Comfort and give peace to this amazing family sweet Jesus as they grieve.

I am deeply saddened by Ma Palmer’s going home to be with the Lord. She was truly a mother to me, but also a mentor whose wisdom, guidance, and example touched (and continue to touch) my life and work deeply. I am grateful and privileged to have known Ma as both.
May the Lord comfort especially Pa, the family and all of us who mourn her departure. Ma’s love, testimony, example, hard work, lessons, and legacy will remain with us. The Bible in 2 Corinthians 5:8 comforts me concerning Ma: We are confident, …. to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
We really want to thank God for Dr. Mrs. Palmer—“Ma Palmer,” as we fondly call her—and for the incredible work that she and Dr. Dennis Palmer have done here in Cameroon over the past 40 plus years.
Forty plus years is no joke. It represents a lifetime of commitment, sacrifice, service, and love for the people of Cameroon. We truly thank God for Ma Palmer for being such a backbone and a strong support to Dr. Palmer and to the work they have done here. Her contribution may not always have been in the forefront, but so much of what has been accomplished would not have been possible without her faithful and steadfast support behind the scenes.
If we are who we are today, and if the work that is being done through the Christian Internal Medicine Specialization (CIMS) Program in Cameroon has reached where it is today, we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the Palmers and to this wonderful couple.
The CIMS Program will never forget Ma Palmer. She supported Dr. Palmer as he established the program and were an integral part of making it work. In many ways, she was the administrator, the registrar, and the person quietly doing so much of the essential work behind the scenes to keep things moving.
But beyond all of that, she was not simply a support to Dr. Palmer—she became a mother to many of us. She cared for us, encouraged us, welcomed us, and made us feel at home while at Mbingo. That motherly love and care is something we will always remember and deeply appreciate.
So we want immensely thank God for her, her sacrifice and her faithfulness. Only God Himself fully knows the scope of the things she did for the CIMS program, Mbingo Baptist Hospital and the people of Cameroon.
May God continue to strengthen and sustain you Pa Palmer and may the Lord reward you both for the many years of faithful service and for the lives that have been touched and transformed through your ministry here in Cameroon.

So sad to hear of the passing into glory if my Cultural Anthropoligy, and Culture in Ministry Teacher at the Cameroon Vaptust Theoligucal Seminary Ndu. She was such a passionate missionary teacher that made ne to be cautous of culture in Ministry. She had confidence in me to allow me Teach one of her subject. To this I was so grateful as I learnt much. Because of the way she presented the concept of Ethnocentrism, I started eating snails which I vowed never to taste. Now I enjoy it so so well. She said, ” After all, people are eating it and not dying. ” Her legacy lives on.

Pa Palmer was my immediate supervisor at CBCHS MTCT PLUS CARE AND TREATMENT CENTRE. Pa thought us a lot as we served our clients with love and compassion and this relationship became family. Ma, I remember how you loved “ ndole” and I made sure I prepared as often as possible. We journeyed together with Pa to Douala , Mutengene, BBH, MBH to visit the clinics. You and Pa cared for me and followed me up for two years when I took ill and today we are so proud of you both. Ma, our story is a very lenghty one. Ma Palmer, I call you Ma Palmer not just because you were fondly called that, but because you truly accepted me as a son in your home and became a mother to me. As much as I can remember the many gifts of seeds that you would always send and more not worth mentioning, I admire your essence most, which was the person you truly were. You have a rare sense of discernment, a passion for excellence in all you do, a devotion to the development of the people around you, and were a strong companion to Pa Palmer as a wife, mother, and partner in all he did. To me, you were a rare example of a wife and mother in contemporary times. To me, it would not be an overstatement to call you the virtuous woman the Bible describes. Your courage and boldness in the face of challenges were a pillar to all who looked up to you, Ma.
You were a very loving and fun person, and my family enjoyed every moment we spent together. The quality conversations over meals, and there was always one thing you were willing to share or teach us. We will greatly miss you, Ma Palmer, but just for a moment, as we hope in the resurrection in Christ Jesus our Lord and Saviour.

It was a blessing to know Ma Palmer all these years. She blessed so many people over many years in different spheres of ministry, be it in Cameroon, in the US through her teaching, her work with International Students Inc. (ISI), her service at church and many others. I remember growing up with Pa and Ma Palmer and their children in Cameroon with my siblings as our families worked at BBH. Then I recall experiencing the warmth of her care when I went to the US. I am thankful that you got to meet my wife and son. My prayers for her husband, sons, and daughters (in-law), grandchildren, and siblings, as they mourn her passing.
Dr Nancy Palmer was such a gentle and kindhearted woman whose life was fully dedicated to missionary service in Cameroon. Her works reached far and wide and the impact of her service to humanity here in Cameroon will outlive generations. May her soul rest in the bosom of the most high God.

Dear Ma,
I have been unable to find the right words to express how sad i really am upon learning that you are gone. Even while writing this post, I am still unable to put my thoughts together.
If there is one thing that i wish I did upon your next visit like you promised before leaving Mbingo in your last visit, I would have told you again how grateful I am that I worked with a boss like you. I wish I had the chance to tell you what I have become and what I can do now after working under your mentorship for 5years.
When I started work with you,I didn’t have enough experience and didn’t know you will be my favourite boss. During these years, you were not just a boss, but also a great mentor, friend, mother, and even a Grand mother to my children.You inspired, mentored and helped me grow as a person to make the right career choices. You saw me through the important stages of life. When I was down, you and Pa Palmer encouraged me. you both inspired me to continue to study which moved me to enroll in a post graduate program.You gave all the support I needed just to ensure I acquired the skills and values needed for my job.
It’s very common in the workplace to hear stories of the nightmare bosses, but I was fortunate that I didnot have that story when you were still my boss. Your approach to me was always as a coach. You guided me and patiently taught me the things I needed to learn.Working with you was fun, even on those days that we had to work really hard, you didn’t make it so hard to me. You trusted me with resposibilitries that gave me opportunities to show what I knew, that’s how you allowed me to learn. When I did something great, you’ll quickly tell me, ‘We’re a perfect match’. You don’t just know how moments like those and how your encouraging words built my confidence.
I also witnessed how much importance you gave your family Ma. Your love for Pa, your children and grand children was just so eminent.
I’ve worked with bosses after you Ma, but it turned out you were one of a kind. It is just very fair to say that CBCHS has lost an encyclopedia & academic backbone, a loving & caring mother, a mentor, boss, friend & ——————–

It’s sad to hear of Dr. Nancy’s passing. I had the privilege of working with her during her time as Chair of the IRB. I remember her as someone who paid attention to detail, was consistent, diligent and deeply committed to her work.
Though I left the organisation many years ago, the news touched me deeply. My heartfelt condolences to you and the entire family. May God comfort and strengthen you all, and may Dr Nancy’s memory continue to inspire others.

It is with deep sadness that My wife Helen and I received the news of the passing into glory of a Sister in the Lord, a colleague, and a friend – Dr. Nancy Palmer. For over 35 years we labored together in Cameroon serving and saving lives among the poorest of the poor people in rural parts of the country. Nancy served on several stations as Station Hostess and later in more senior positions and teaching roles. Wherever she served, she was a role model, accountable, gentle, frank and a mentor. She loved and helped Cameroon women, men, and children in diverse ways. She was a mother to all. Her life touched thousands of lives who will mourn her. Together with her husband Dennis, we built a strong health system in Cameroon which stands tall serving millions of people, bringing many to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Drs. Nancy and Dennis Palmer remain key pillars to our medical mission in Cameroon. Her early departure from this life is a major loss to all of us. God will comfort her husband, children and grand children. We remain comforted by our belief that one day we shall meet her in glory to part no more.

Ma Palmer was a great encourager to me when I served at Mbingo. She welcomed me, taught me about the culture and lifestyle, corrected me gently when needed, sat with me over tea to talk, hiked with me, and was a constant source of stability. My time at Mbingo was richer and fuller because of her and Pa. She was well loved.

My heart is heavy upon learning of the transition into glory of Dr. Nancy Lea Palmer. Nancy was a blessing to me personally and to the Chosen Children Program.
During my Public Health studies with AMREF/MOI University in Kenya, she supported and encouraged my research on Chosen Children (CBCHS Orphans Program). Later, during her stay in Cameroon, she and her husband, Dr. Dennis Palmer, faithfully raised funds and supported the program, helping transform the lives of many less privileged children.
Her life truly reflected the words of Jesus: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these… you did for me.” Matthew 25:40
Nancy has finished her race, but her legacy of love, service, and compassion lives on in the many orphans’ lives she touched.
Thank you, Nancy, for believing in the children and in the work God entrusted to us. May you rest in the presence of your Lord. Glory be to God for your life and legacy.

I just learned from Daniel Fokum today about the passing of your beloved wife, Ma Nancy. I was deeply saddened and shocked by the news, as I had no idea that she had been ill. Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences during this very difficult time.
My heart is filled with memories from the early 2000s, when I had just arrived in the United States. I will never forget how you and Ma Nancy opened your home to me, especially during Christmas, and made me feel welcomed, loved, and at home at a time when I was far away from my own family.
I will always remember Ma Nancy for her warmth, kindness, and the beautiful smile with which she welcomed me whenever I came to your home. Those memories are very precious to me, and I will carry them with me always.
