Paul Dean “PD” McCaughey, 71, of Milan MO, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012, at the Kansas City VA Medical Center.  PD was born May 24, 1941, was raised south of Milan, and was a longtime resident.  He was a 1959 graduate of Milan High School, leaving shortly thereafter to work with friends in Kansas City.  In 1963he joined the United States Army.  He served in the 77th Armor Division at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado until November 1965.  While serving in Colorado Springs, he met and married Elaine Berges of Ovid, Colorado.  After his discharge from the Army, he and Elaine moved back to the Milan area where PD ranched and cowboyed.  Their first son, Tye Anthony, was born in 1967.  PD then moved his family back to Colorado living in Greely and had their second son Todd Shawn in 1970.  The family returned to the Milan area where he worked for Burlington Northern railroad.  Tracy Lane was born in 1974.  PD continued to live on a farm north of Milan working on the railroad, running a shoe and saddle repair shop in Green City, and ranching until 1988.  Once again living in Colorado, PD worked as a horse trainer and later various construction jobs.  Returning alone to Milan in 1997, PD worked as a carpenter, and eventually was able to construct a shop at his home to continue his favorite vocation, leatherwork and saddle repair.  He continued to live in his childhood home until illness forced him to move in August of 2012.  In his last hospitalization a recurrence of lung cancer took his life.

 

Paul Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Bertha McCaughey of Milan, brothers Donald Edward and Frances McCaughey of Milan and a son, Tracy Lane McCaughey of Camden, MO.  He is survived by son Tye McCaughey, daughter-in-law Clare McCaughey and grandchildren Morgan and Garrett McCaughey all of Camden, and son Todd McCaughey and daughter-in-law Judy McCaughey and granddaughter Bailey McCaughey of Colorado Springs, CO.

 

After cremation, there will be a memorial service at Schoene Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Milan on Saturday, September 1st at 11:00a.m.  Interment will be at Shrock Cemetery in Reger, MO at a later date.
