Pearl Shern

Ophelia Pearl Shern, 75 of Columbia, MO passed away July 11, 2010 at The Bluffs nursing home, after a battle with cancer.
She was born in rural Boone County, MO, October 16, 1934, to the late J.H. and Cleo Foley Rowland of Harrisburg, MO. There will be a Celebration of life and Memorial service held at 2:00 pm July 16, 2010 at Dripping Springs Church, 2701 West Dripping Springs Road, Columbia, MO. Everyone is invited to have fellowship, food and reminisce about the good times we all remember sharing with Pearl.
Pearl ran a Beauty Salon in her home for several years. She volunteered at Columbia Senior Center working in the gift shop. She is a member of Red Rock United Methodist Church, but has attended Dripping Springs Church for many years. She loved the outdoors, was an avid reader and in earlier years loved cooking……especially home made dinner rolls…….yummm! We can smell them cooking now. After retirement, Pearl took painting classes and leaves several beautiful oil paintings, mostly outdoor scenes and horses, of course. She loved horseback riding, motorcycles and of all things semi-trucks and tractor pulls.  Pearl was married to Robert Leslie Shern and he preceded her in death. She later married to Donald Akins who also preceded her in death.  She is survived by four children, Robert Garland Shern and Farron Kyle Shern of Columbia, MO, Valerie Shern Kneppel of Eugene, OR and Leaslie Rashel Dawn Canole of Fulton MO ; two sisters Donna Dean Thornhill of Kimberling City, MO and Janice Kay Murray of Columbia, MO, one brother Terry Joe Rowland of Harrisburg, MO. Nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, four step great grandchildren also survive her, and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by grandson, Kaleb Levi Shern.  Memorials may be given to Rock Red United Methodist Church, Dripping Springs Church and American Cancer Society.

Seeing that we have lost Pearl makes me very sad. I miss the good old days when we were children and our families were so very close. It felt more like extended family with Bob and Pearl being an extra Mom and Dad, and having 2 more brothers and 2 more sisters. My deepest sympathy for your loss.

Bryan and I both have wonderful memories of growing up around your family and of Pearl. I remember going to pick up Grandma Havens with Grandpa on Saturday mornings after Pearl did her hair (faithfully every week). Pearl was a very sweet lady and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. We are thinking of you all.
