Reta L. Nicholson, age 87, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2026, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Reta was born in Texas to Robert and Dorothy Jones, living all over the world as an Army brat, but spent the majority of her life (61 years) in Columbia. She lived her life devoted to the people and communities she loved, and will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and leadership in the social services community of Columbia and Boone County.
Reta was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, niece, cousin, and friend, whose greatest joy was her family. She especially loved family gatherings, entertaining, traveling, and cooking for everyone. Those who knew Reta will remember her quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and vast knowledge of almost any subject. Her endless service in such roles as the owner of DreamMachine, management of Everyday People, and service through organizations like the Lions 20/20 Club, McCambridge House, and Missouri Prevention Network is legendary. She is also known worldwide for her help in founding Operation Footlocker, “The Mobile Military Brat Museum,” currently housed at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans.
She is survived by her children, James Robinson (Natalie Brown), Karen Rivera, Sonya Nicholson (David Adams), and Kurtis Nicholson; her grandchildren, Laura Talbert (Alonzo), Sarah Larrabee (Adam), Austin Robinson, Lauren Robinson, and Isaac Adams (Brooke); her great-grandchildren, Jonathan Talbert, Erin Talbert, Sydney Talbert, Hattie Robinson, Andrew Talbert, Aiden Baugh, and Riley Baugh; as well as her bonus grandchildren, Gregory Rivera, Jr. and Chadd Rivera.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Donald “Nic” Nicholson, and her parents.
A celebration of life will be held in early October, with details being sent to family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that Reta’s memory be honored by loving your family and friends well, and giving back to your community.
Reta was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by her family, her friends, and all whose lives she touched.
