Richmond Carroll Bass

Richmond Carroll Bass, Jr., 89, of Columbia died on August 30, 2015, at The Bluffs in Columbia. “Rich” was born to Richmond Carroll Bass and Doris Jamison Bass on February 17, 1926, in Plantersville, Mississippi. He spent his early years in Plantersville and moved to Tupelo, MS, with his family in 1941. He had three sisters: Linda Bass Henderson of Baton Rouge, LA, and she survives; Jenny Marie Laughlin and Mary Katherine Bass preceded him in death. He married Dorothy Workman Bass (Dot) in 1947, and she survives. Richmond and Dorothy have four children: Beth Simpson and husband Andy, of Columbia; Richmond C. Bass III, of Cale, AR; Sara Ann Doll and husband Keith, of St. Louis; and William T. Bass of Monument, CO. Rich joyfully welcomed eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren into the family.

Richmond and Dot lived many years in the Memphis, TN, area and moved to Columbia in 2006 to be near family. Rich was dedicated to his work in the transportation industry and serving as a sales representative for Myers Tire Supply. He especially enjoyed family gatherings, which have continued since he and Dorothy moved to The Bluffs. Richmond was a lifelong Methodist and a Shriner. He enjoyed gardening and reading Louis L’Amour westerns and had read well over a hundred at last count. He was a gifted story-teller, and his reminiscences will be treasured by his family for years to come.

A memorial service will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church, 123 S. Ninth St., on Saturday, September 19, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Activity Department at The Bluffs, 3105 Bluff Creek Dr., Columbia, MO 65201; or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org/give. To Dot and Family,

Through my hospice visits, I was privileged to meet most of the Bass family. I will always remember the strength in Rich’s handshakes and the eye-to-contact that he made in our conversations. A special thanks to Dot for our conversations about her life with Rich over the 60 some years.

I will remember Dot and Rich in my prayers.

    Jack, Hospice Volunteer

Dearest Dot and Beth and all of your sweet family, I am so sorry for your loss in Rich’s passing. It was such a pleasure to have known him, when you all lived in Memphis. You have always been in my prayers ever since I was honored to become friends with you. You will be in my prayers especially as you go through these first necessary but difficult days ahead of you, not only this week, but the weeks ahead as you adjust to a new normal. I will continue to keep you in my prayers, with the following additions: that you gain peace in your loss, joy in your shared memories, and comfort from the knowledge that you are loved by so many people.
