Roger B. Hawver

Roger B. Hawver, 74, of North Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the North Kansas City Hospital, with his children by his side. He was born December 20, 1949, in Stafford, Kansas, to Earl L. Hawver and Gertrude (Titus) Hawver.

Roger grew up in Stafford and graduated from Stafford High School in 1968. He continued his education at York College, St. Mary's of the Plains, and Kansas Wesleyan University. After working in the cattle industry for many years, Roger moved to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1988 to pursue a career in coaching and teaching. He spent the last 33 years of his career employed by the North Kansas City School District before retiring in 2023.

Roger maintained a lifelong love and appreciation of athletics, beginning with playing baseball as a boy, then basketball in high school and college, followed by slo-pitch softball throughout his adult life, as well as coaching several sports. He instilled a similar love in his children, leading to childhood, high school, college, and adult athletic careers of their own. He was his children’s most demanding coach but always their biggest fan. Roger enjoyed watching various sporting events, whether in person or on television, a pastime shared with his children. It was rare for one of their telephone calls to end without a lively conversation inevitably involving sports.

He is survived by: daughter, Ashley Hawver Duncan, of Wichita, Kansas; son, Cole (Sarah) Hawver; grandsons, Maxwell and Franklin Hawver, all of Manhattan, Kansas. He will be remembered as a loving and dedicated father, a doting and proud Papa Roger, and a genuinely good and kind man, always ready and willing to help others.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nancy Hawver Duncan.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Kansas City, Missouri, and Stafford, Kansas. To obtain future service information, please continue to visit this website.

Roger was A very dear friend. His kindness will be remembered forever. He would make a point to visit me every Sunday at work if he was in town. Every super bowl, I would make him Rotel dip for the game. If I needed a friend for any reason Roger was right there. He will be in my heart forever. Miss you buddy!

I always enjoyed having Roger in the building. He was very invested in the students and a great supporter of our athletics in the building. I can’t count the number of hours we chatted WAY after school hours, when I would come in from practice or a match, and he really enjoyed hearing the success of the students on the courts. You can tell his love for teaching, coaching, and serving the school was great. Thanks for everything Roger!!! You will be missed, but not forgotten.

Roger I will miss you 😔. I loved when Roger would come in for a dental appointment. He always told me I was his favorite dental assistant and would always ask about my son that worked in the office years back. I would tell him he was my favorite patient named Roger. I didn’t know he passed until very recent. My birthday will have special thoughts of Roger from now on as he passed on it. Rest in peace to my favorite patient named Roger 🙏

Roger was my daughter’s basketball coach for a club team when she was in middle school. He was tough but the team learned so much from him. My daughter still talks about the time he made them practice diving across the gym floor for loose balls. No one left there without skinned knees and palms that day. However, he ruined their chances to become a hand or knee models that day. 😉🤭
He was exactly the coach you hope your child has the chance to learn from.
