Roy Gene Girkin (89) of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away Monday March 20.2023 at St Luke’s East Hospital in Lee’s Summit MO with his wife and son at his side.
Gene was born in Melbourne, AR. He graduated from Searcy High School. He served in the National Guard. Gene earned his masters degree and Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Arkansas. He practiced pathology in Fort Smith, AR until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy and children, Gregory of Richardson TX, Jeffrey (Carla) of Blue Springs, MO Christopher (Laura) of Birmingham, AL. and four grandchildren: Mathew, Kimberly, Silas and Jude. Also surviving are his brother Jim and his sister Shirley Moon.
He was preceded in death by his parents Festus and Clara Girkin and his brother Bob.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

We are so sorry to hear about Gene today. Only this week I was reading a log of sailing on the river in the 1980s and 1990s. What fun races and sails we all had! Gene often beat me and always made the races competitive. Eddie Leonard, Gene, and I often ran close races that kept us on our toes and looking for the smallest advantage to parley into a win. He was quick to dart across my bow on a tack to take the lead. Those Wednesday evening race memories are some of my best memories of all. Now that river is an empty waterscape, no racing buoys, no sailboats, only faded memories, but warm ones. Sure glad we still have them to enjoy.
