Tessie Willowdean Dorland (Thomas), 89, of Independence, MO passed away Saturday, January 4th, 2020 at home, on the same property where she was born. Tessie was born November 12, 1930 to Carl and Elena (Anthony) Thomas. She is survived by her children: Paula James and husband Cecil; Larry Dorland and wife Peggy; Richard Dorland; Janice Seek and husband Ted; and Tammy Bass; and son-in-law Stephen Brack. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Paul Dorland; daughter Judy Brack (Dorland); parents Carl and Elena Thomas; Siblings: Sonny Thomas, David Thomas, Helen Thomas, and Vance Thomas; and loving son-in-law Randy Bass.
Tessie was a very strong-willed, selfless, loving person. She was a caregiver for the elderly and loved having her grandchildren around. She loved to sit outside in the sun and watch the birds, especially cardinals. She was the strength of the family, always assuring everyone that everything was going to be okay. If she could tell us now, she would say “I’m alright. I’m in a better place. Keep your chin up, be careful, and know I love you.” Tessie will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Fun fact: Tessie’s choice for her and her husband’s burial spot was chosen because as a young couple, that was their make out place.
Visitation services will be held Wednesday, January 8th, at 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Heartland Cremation & Burial Society, 6113 Blue Ridge Blvd, Raytown, MO 64133. A graveside service will follow after the visitation at Oak Ridge Cemetery on Salisbury Rd. off of 291 in Independence, MO.

My aunt Tessie was the most wonderful kind hearted person I’ve ever known. She inspired every one who she came in contact with. She is now welcomed in to Heaven with the love she spread here on Earth.
John 14:3

Hello to all who may read this. You may not remember me. I am Bonnie (Thomas) Turner, and Tessie was my cousin whom I haven’t seen since childhood. My parents were Sharon and Mildred Thomas. My brothers were Wayne (died at age 2), Eugene, Lawrence, and Paul. At age 92, I am the only one of my siblings left, so I thought I’d see if I could find Uncle Carl and Aunt Elena’s children.
I live in De Pere, Wisconsin, and I’m a published author and editor. I’ve been married twice and have five children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. I have a Facebook profile with a picture of my 3-year-old self. I would love to hear from some of my family. I may also be e-mailed. God bless all of you.
