VIRGIL T. LYERLY, RETIRED COLONEL U.S. ARMY

Memorial Services for Virgil T. (Tom) Lyerly will be held at 11am on Friday, November 7, 2014 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 209 N. 7th Street, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048 with visitation at 10am at the church Parish House. Interment will follow at 1:30pm at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Virgil Thomas Lyerly, the son of Robert Wellington and Wylodine (McKee) Lyerly, was born in Wetumpka, Alabama on September 14, 1934. Tom passed away November 1, 2014 at his home in Leavenworth, Kansas with his family and friends by his side.

Tom graduated from his beloved Auburn University (War Damn Eagle!) in 1956 with degrees in Mechanical and Textile Engineering, beginning a career designing work gloves. After joining the U. S. Army in 1957, he found his true calling and proudly served as an Armor officer for the next 30 years and 30 days. Following retirement, he worked for Northrop Grumman for 12 years utilizing the skills gained in his military career.

Tom had several loves in his life; his family, church, golf, and cards. He was a very active supporter in all of his children and grandchildren’s endeavors. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church serving in several capacities. He was a member of the Leavenworth Country Club and played in several bridge clubs.

Tom is survived by his wife of 55 years, Julie; children, Richard (Sharon) of San Antonio, Texas; Susan (Tom) Sakauye of Clive, Iowa; Jennifer Green of North Liberty, Iowa; grandchildren, Gary Krier, Samantha Lyerly, Taylor Green, Matt Green, Steven Lyerly, Jackson Green and Bailey Green; great- grandchild, William Krier. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Jane Lyerly of Montgomery, Alabama.

Preceding Tom in death are his parents and his brother, Robert Lyerly.
