Warren Gerard Slebos

Warren Gerard Slebos, 80, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, colleague, and friend, passed away on April 29, 2025, at home in Kansas City, Missouri, after a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Born May 7, 1944, to Gerard and Tillie (Vellenga) Slebos in Chicago, Illinois, Warren’s journey took him to Central College in Pella, Iowa, where he played football and laid the foundation for a life dedicated to education and recreation. He furthered his studies with a master’s degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where he would devote his entire 31-year career to the Recreational Services department.

Warren’s contributions to the University of Iowa were nothing short of remarkable. He was the visionary behind numerous projects and programs that enriched the community, including the MacBride Nature Recreation Area, Wildlife Camp, MacBride Day Camp, Cultural Diversity, the Haunted Forest, and the Iowa Raptor Project. He also managed the softball complex, intramurals, graduate assistant program, and taught officiating. His passion for connecting people with nature was evident in the epic fishing trips he led to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Quetico Provincial Park, spanning over six decades. Known affectionately as the “Wizard of Walleye Fishing,” Warren’s love for fishing was matched only by his dedication to fostering a sense of adventure and appreciation for the outdoors in others.

In addition to his professional achievements, Warren dedicated over thirty years of service to the University of Iowa Officials Association and officiated as a line judge for the Iowa City Athletic Officials Association. After retiring to his log cabin in Mio, Michigan, he continued to serve the community by working part-time for the Division of Wildlife, assisting with deer checks and land management.

Warren’s quick wit and infectious smile made him a cherished friend to many. He had a unique ability to connect with people, often surprising friends and family with unannounced visits, always bringing warmth and laughter. His love for life was evident in the simple pleasures he enjoyed, including his affection for ice cream and candy bars (as evidenced by the candy wrappers in his car).

A devoted father to his two children, Jennifer Slebos (Hayes) Redmond, and Ryan (Nancy) Slebos, Warren cherished every moment spent with his family. He was a proud grandfather to Madelyn, Nolan, Alice, Chris, and Hannah, and a delighted great-grandfather to Alaina. His family was his greatest joy, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness.

Warren is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, and three sisters, Anita Mitchell, Gladys Jamison, and Janet Fillmore, who will forever hold his memory, and countless stories close to their hearts. His legacy of kindness, adventure, loyalty, and dedication to family and community will live on in the lives he touched. As we remember Warren, we celebrate his life, which was filled with love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten. In his own words, “I have had a wonderful life.”

Please join us in celebrating his life Sunday, August 3, 2025, between 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Park Lodge in Terry Trueblood Recreation Area, 579 McCollister Boulevard, Iowa City, IA 52240. Lunch will be served and there will be a program at noon, followed by time for sharing fond memories, stories, and fishing tales.

    To Warren’s family:
I am forever grateful to have learned from, worked for and laughed with Warren. My two years as a Graduate Assistant, in the Campus Recreation department , were extremely positive, memorable and significant in my life. I am thankful that I was able to reconnect with Warren over the last few years. Driving from IC to Decorah and back with him last fall was especially rewarding.I will miss Warren’s wit, sly smile and I’m betting his spirit will always live in the BWCA!
